Someone Behind Me on the Scale

Well, it was bound to happen.

I had one of those most unpleasant moments, finally, stepping on the scale and finding my weight had gone up SIX POUNDS from the day before.

I was convinced a dog had a paw on the scale, but they were both in bed.

I cleared it out and stepped on again. Five pounds more this time, which isn’t six, but which is five, and that’s shocking.

My pattern has been pretty steady. I hit a weight, I hover around it with about a pound of variation for a couple of days, and then I finally rest at it for two to six days, then go down again. I haven’t had a wild swing like this one, however, since the battery went haywire.

A few things are at play, and I’m not worried:

  • Two days ago, for my birthday, I ate four or five bites of cake. I didn’t order it, but the (stupid) waiter brought it. I’d been thinking of ordering it and had decided not to, but my resolve was down when it showed up.
  • I also at some higher-fat meat than normal for dinner that night, and though I tried to load up on salad by ordering the salad bar, the restaurant had an absolutely dreadful salad bar. Iceberg lettuce mix that was fairly dried out, mealy tomatoes, and completely raw cauliflower and broccoli. I love both of those veggies, but they are tough to eat completely raw. Everything else on the salad bar, I kid you not, was in mayonnaise or marinated in oil. And, seeing the quality, I’m guessing it wasn’t extra virgin olive oil.
  • I had lunch out that day. A healthy lunch, but still, food out, which means more sodium and fat than I’d get at home.
  • The following day, I went for a 3-mile run AND worked out with a trainer for the first time. To compensate/reward myself, I bumped up the calories and carbs for the day. Not radically, but more than I’m usually consuming. And I ate almost 1/3rd of a cup of cashews—not raw, but salted and roasted, no doubt in oil. Oy.
  • I also ate lunch and dinner out again.
  • Both days, I forgot to take my fiber.

So, I think a couple of days of being more careful will get things back on track. And, I’m guessing those five or six pounds are a combination of salt, water, and voodoo. But it was nice (in a painful way) to have a quick reminder of how sensitive my body is to even minor changes these days.

Before this little incident, I was a pound away from 70 lost. I’ve logged the gain in Lose It, but not here on the site, because I want to give it one more day to see if it all goes away again.

Thanks for listening!

  1. Frustrating, I’m sure:( But I love your attitude about it all. And I’m sure you know that there is no way you ate an extra 21000 calories that would be needed to really gain 6 pounds overnight!

    • Andie says:

OMG – I had not even done the math on how many calories that would be. Hilarious! Yeah, unless I’m sleep eating – at someone else’s house where there’s actually that much food! – seems unlikely. 😀

  2. Agree with Karen sounds a bit strange. I doubt you could have eaten enough to gain 6lbs in such a short period of time. Stay positive and I’m sure the 6lb ghost will disappear in the next couple of days?

(Presume you didn’t move the scale. If you did that could be the cause)

    • Andie says:

I wonder about moving the scale – it does scoot around from time to time, and was definitely in a slightly different place, but maybe this time, something got a little too jiggity and I’ll now have to readjust. Glad I have the weekly weigh-in at the doctor’s office as a second check on things.

  3. I must admit, Andie, if I had that kind of shock when I hit the scale in the morning…I’m not sure I could be keeping it together as well as you. Even with the logical rationale I would panicked and probably doing cardio the entire afternoon in hopes of making it go away quickly! LOL – I’m spastic like that, and I’m not afraid to admit it. 🙂

Hope everything levels out for you by morning!

Don’t think for a minute that’s not exactly what I did – I was back at the hotel, thinking I’d just crash & watch TV, but I dragged myself to the exercise room for 15 minutes on the elliptical trainer with those phantom pounds in mind.

  4. 6 lbs, or even 5 lbs, seems — wrong. I can’t imagine any body being able to gain so much, or retain so much water if that may be the case, overnight. And even if it is, then if it can be gained overnight, it may also be able to disappear overnight. In any case, you have just the right attitude here. Seriously. You’re an inspiration.

    • Andie says:

I’m thinking I may wait until Monday to weigh, just to give everything a chance to really settle down. Two nights to disappear seems like plenty of time.

Sounds like your scales are a bit dodgy too.
